So how can I get some service around here?

Everyone knows - or can guess - that I'm a Mac fan. I love my iMac. I love OS X. At times, I love Apple. This is not one of those times.

This may seem inconsequential to some, but ever since I updated to Mac OS X 10.2/Jaguar, everything has been absolutely smashing except for one thing: My monitor's geometry settings will not stick through a reboot. And this is not just me. There are entire threads on this on MacFixit and even the Apple discussion boards. I'm not a programming guru yet - I'm working on it - but I'm assuming that these settings are written to a preference file somewhere. How hard can it be to fix this?

Click on the picture to your right to see a full-sized simulation of what my screen looks like every time I reboot. Notice the big, black space around my actual desktop.

I was hoping 10.2.2, which came down from the Apple mountain through our Software Update preference panes this week, would deliver an answer. Surely the Apple techs had heard my whining in the e-mails I sent them through the Mac OS X feedback page. Nope. What's more, a fix for a similar problem in some third-party displays was a part of the update, but apparently still not for the early iMacs like mine (a Rev. B Bondi nicknamed "Frankenmac II"). From the release notes for 10.2.2: "Addresses an issue in which ColorSync settings for some third-party displays are not retained after restarting or logging out."

Huh? You mean Apple fixes this problem for third-party hardware before its own?

What do I have to do, start a class-action lawsuit like the one that finally got us same early iMac owners support for our early video cards in OS X?

Do me a favor, if you're an early iMac owner like me, wander on over to the aforementioned feedback page and let them know I sent you. Maybe we'll finally get some service.

By the way, besides this issue, I've had no problems with 10.2.2. Actually, I've had hardly any problems at all with Jaguar except for this. That's what makes it so frustrating.
